During my pediatric residency, I was physically mentally stressed, but I had youth on my side. Around that time, my friend, an orthopedic surgeon, shared that raising children is more stressful than residency because you’re “on-call” 24/7! I wanted children, yes, but more stress? Heck no!
My hardest parenting “season” was when the youngest was in preschool, and the older two were in K-3 elementary school. Stress overwhelmed me, and I felt like I was failing as a mother. I grabbed my “crutches” – caffeine, sugar, and wine – and limped along for months.
I read The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron and decided to dump whatever was on my mind onto three pages in my journal every morning. I’d write my to-do’s, my complaints, and sometimes my gratitude. I’d get it ALL out. The more I dumped onto the page, the lighter I felt.
Sometimes, a brilliant idea or a new perspective would surface, and my attitude would shift to a more peaceful, less stressful place. In time, I incorporated other stress reducers in addition to journaling (See Step 5: Quiet Your Mind.) After you learn them, teach them to your children.
According to the American Psychological Association, chronic stress is linked to the six leading causes of death and more than 75 percent of all physician office visits. None of us can get rid of stress, but all of us can create a natural stress-relief toolbox.
My Natural Stress-Relief Toolbox:
- Adaptogen Tea
- Breath: Yoga & Meditation
The one stress-relief tool that I never miss is my adaptogen tea. Every morning while my coffee is brewing, I take 1-2 oz. If my energy slumps in the afternoon, I take another 1-2 oz. If I’m stressed out in the evening, I take another 1-2 oz along with my nightly Sleep Support & Renewal spray before climbing into bed.
As one mama says: “This adaptogen tea has been a game-changer! It allows me to feel calm and see the good in the day rather than feel the stress that points me to the negative!”
Create your own natural stress-relief toolbox or copy mine, but don’t let stress sit there. Dig in and put these tools to use so you can feel the difference every day.
