How I Open My Heart, Instead of Slamming a Door

by | Mar 8, 2021 | Mindset

I was driving and listening to an online course when I heard from the recording, “if you don’t have any problems, that means you’re dead!” That made me laugh out loud. It’s so obvious, right? Problems are a sign of life. A sign we’re still alive and growing.

Our life journeys are different. But, if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, frustrated, or disappointed – like you just wanna slam a door and shut everyone out – trust me, I’ve been there. When our girls were younger, I’d hide out in our bathroom to decompress. The problem is, you can’t hide out forever!

Opening your heart again, being vulnerable is the path forward for vibrant health. It’s the way to connect deeper with yourself, with the Divine, and with others, so you can be, do and give your best self every day. Keep reading for three ways I’ve learned to open my heart that’ll get you back to being your bada** loving self again in under ten minutes.

STACK GRATITUDE

If you want the quickest surefire way out of any negative emotion (fear, anger, frustration, self-pity), focus on someone or something you’re grateful for. Close your eyes, take a deep breath in, and exhale. Place your hands on your heart. Focus on someone or something from your past or present that you’re incredibly grateful for. Bring that person or experience into your heart. Now focus on another person or experience from your past or present that you’re thankful for. Bring that into your heart. Keep stacking on your heart the images and feelings of what you’re grateful for. As you stack one on top of the other, watch how it’s impossible to hold onto your negative emotion. “You can’t feel fear or anger while feeling gratitude at the same time. The antidote to fear is gratitude. The antidote to anger is gratitude.” – Tony Robbins

PLAY A SONG

Laughing, one of my daughters called to my attention that the most played song on my Spotify playlist is Devi Prayer. Really Mom? Yes, really. The first time I heard the Devi Prayer song, I was at a live event meditating with 16,000 people. It was the most profound meditation I’ve ever experienced because it healed a relationship with someone I love dearly (and she wasn’t physically there!). So when I hear this song, it instantly opens my heart. Instantly. Music transcends language. Until today, I never even knew what this song was saying to me. In fact, I just Googled the translation for the lyrics and discovered it’s about interconnectedness – that we are all One! When I listen, I can feel my tension release. I can feel my heart soften. I can feel myself opening up again, willing to reconnect. This song may do absolutely nothing for you, but find a piece that does and have fun with it!

GET MOVIN!

My girls know one of the easiest ways to get me out of a bad mood in the kitchen cooking is to put on a great song and dance! Movement helps our emotions move. If dancing isn’t your jam, yoga has many heart-opening postures like the cobra, upward-dog, camel, and bridge pose. If you’re willing to risk looking stupid, try Kinrgy (kidding aside!) It’s kind of like a dance yoga hybrid. Some of the Kinrgy movements feel fun. Others are downright strange! Either way, it gets me laughing and my body reopening.

There you have it! Those are three ways I’ve learned to open my heart in under ten minutes. Have fun and find yours. ’Cause one thing is for sure. You’re alive, which means you have problems. Hopefully, these simple tools will help you return to vulnerability and keep you showing up in your life for more growth. And if you find yourself hiding out in the bathroom, know you’re not alone. Close your eyes, breathe, and start stacking that gratitude.
