I was a 4th-year medical student on surgery radiology rounds when the attending physician pointed to an x-ray and said: “Sue, tell us the anatomical location.” My heart raced. My face flushed. Paralyzed, I voiced the answer in my head, but not out loud.
I wanted to be right all the time. If my answer was wrong, I feared the attending physician would chastise me in front of the medical students, and the surgery residents all crowded around me.
In my silence, he said the answer and then proceeded to rant, “how we must know basic anatomy to help patients.” I felt so dumb, less than, not intellectually worthy of being a physician. Here’s the kicker: the answer I said in my head, but not out loud, was right!
I’ve learned from the #1 success coach in the world, Tony Robbins, how all fear stems from
Our Two Greatest Fears:
- Fear of not being loved or lovable
- Fear of not being enough
As a mom raising three daughters to be kind and brave, this fear knowledge brings clarity as we navigate life together.
After school the other day, one daughter said: “well I missed an opportunity to share my answer.” I listened, reminded her of our two greatest fears, and then asked which one she thought prevented her from sharing her answer. It was a long-winded explanation, but in the end, she owned it.
We all want to be loved, feel lovable, and enough.
It’s refreshing to navigate through fear in such a simple, easy to understand way. It also allows us to see not only our behavior but also the behavior of others in a more positive light.
When we give in to our fear, don’t speak up – share our answer – whether right or wrong, we shrink. But when we step outside our comfort zone and face fear, we tap into our full potential and grow – even when we’re “wrong.”
May you speak your soul, shine your light, and radiate: I am love. I am lovable. I am enough.
