Yesterday when I opened up my custom nutrition plan based on my genetics, I was floored! I’m always looking for tools to optimize diet and supplementation for myself and others, but have never found a single tool to hand people.
The problem is there’s no one right diet for everyone, even within the same household, which can feel frustrating.
Some people go on a Paleo diet and feel fantastic, while others feel terrible! The same goes for Keto, Mediterranean, and Vegan. Why is that? Likely genetics.
When I stumbled upon GeneFood I was intrigued that they’ve identified 20 distinct diet types based on genetics.
Rather than trial and error with a Keto diet, for example, you could run your genetics and see if you’re better suited for a Lean Machine diet, where butter in your coffee is a bad idea. How cool is that?
I’ve tried so many different ways of eating and learned a ton about what’s best for me through food intolerance testing, trial, and error. But, I’ve never mastered my macros: the ideal ratio of protein, fat, and carbs. For example, a typical ketogenic diet is 70% fat, 20% protein, 10% carbs, versus the standard American diet of 50% carbs, 35% fat, 15% protein.
So I decided to give GeneFood a try. My kinda FUN!
I learned based on my genetic markers and the most recent research in the field of nutrigenomics, that my genetic type is best suited for a macrobiotic style of eating: whole foods, low fat, mostly plant-based diet, where the vast majority of my protein comes from plants, and the minority comes from fish! So my ideal ratio of macros is 70% carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 15% fat. Wow! My results reconfirmed what I’ve learned through testing, trial, and error.
