As a pediatric physician and wellness expert, I’m blessed with helping others through health obstacles. Ideally, I guide the individual to see their obstacle as an opportunity if they haven’t already. But that’s not always easy! 


I do personal development courses as a daily practice, and struggle to see the silver lining within every life challenge. 


In Tony Robbins’ Ultimate Edge online course, I read this week that “Pain Provides 3 Choices.” Anytime what you expect doesn’t meet your current reality, you feel pain. It could be your health, a loved one’s health, a relationship, your career, or your finances. 


You’re frustrated, angry, overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, and feel life is happening TO you. Instead of being fired up, inspired, engaged, and seeing how life is happening FOR you. 


Pain provides three choices. 


Choices. As in, you always have a way out of your discomfort if you choose! 


Your 3 Choices:

  1. Blame
  2. Change Your Life Conditions
  3. Change Your Perspective


Who Do You Blame?

You can blame an event in your life. You can blame others (usually parents). But you know what I find true for myself and those I work with? We blame ourselves! Any way you shake it, “Blame is a choice that doesn’t give you any benefits.” says Tony. I can clearly see that’s true for me. When I beat myself up, my only result is feeling terrible and stuck. 


How Can You Change Your Life Conditions?

Those who choose to work with me to overcome their health challenges are making a choice to change their diet and lifestyle. Not everything at once, but one step at a time. Small changes over time add up to big change. Progress = Happiness. 


How Can You Change Your Perspective?

At some point, what you expect life to be doesn’t match your current reality. As a parent, I envisioned swaddling up and nursing my child. Blissful. I didn’t think about breast infections, sleep deprivation, and the curveballs that come with raising a happy, healthy child, tween, and teen. 


None of us are free from expectations, but some of us have fewer rules. Some of us more readily accept the flow of life. This is one of the areas I continue to work on. The less I expect, and the more I accept, the happier I am! 


When life throws you obstacles, which do you choose? 


Drop blame like a bad habit and pick up empowering change. 


With continued focus and consistent action, you’re sure to get out of pain quickly and back to feeling fired up, inspired, engaged, and seeing how life is working for you.
