During my pediatric residency, every four nights for three years, I had night call in a hospital where I’d keep my body and brain functioning for 30 hours straight to help children. I wanted to cross the finish line for each call without crumbling so I could eventually cross the threshold into pediatric doctorhood.
These intense bursts of night call training stretched my pediatric residency classmates and me beyond our comfort zone. Mentally and physically exhausted, we soldiered on, earning our right to become pediatric physicians. But we weren’t going it alone, we crossed the threshold into doctorhood together as a tribe.
I would have been “dead” long ago without tribes. We’re tribal by nature – born into communities that help us survive and thrive. Tribes are forever forming and re-evolving in our lives. We find them, and they find us. They’re magnetic and quite magical. When child rearing brings me to my knees, my mama tribe brings humor to the altar. Tribes keep us alive – physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
The key ingredient that holds members of a healthy balanced tribe together is vulnerability – ”the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity.” – Brené Brown, PhD
